(upbeat music) (whooshes) - So, I'm finishing up college soon, and I wanna get ahead in my career, but attending networking events is a little bit difficult for me, and I think I really need some help.
(upbeat music) - Hi, I'm Arden Clise with Clise Etiquette.
I'm an etiquette expert, and I'm going to help Matt with some networking tips, so he can make a great impression.
Matt, when you're meeting people, it's really important you have a good handshake that communicates confidence.
- Okay.
- Alright?
- Yeah.
- And so, the way we have a good confident handshake, is you start with your hand straight up, and we're going to touch web to web, all the way in, and then your fingers are wrapped around my hand, and mine are wrapped around yours.
Firm, but you're not killing me.
- Nah, just.
- Yeah, yeah.
- Alright.
- And then two to three pumps, and you let go.
I'm a three-er.
- Alright.
- And then you let go.
Yeah.
(upbeat music) Matt, do you struggle with remembering people's names?
- Yeah, pretty much all the time.
- Really?
- Yeah, it's hard.
- Yeah, it is hard.
So, let me give you some tips for remembering.
So, you need to repeat the person's name three times in your brain as soon as you meet them.
Matt, Matt, Matt, and then say it three times during your conversation with that person.
- Oh, okay, yeah.
- It's nice to meet you, Matt.
- Ah.
- Blah, blah, blah, blah.
What do you like to do, Matt?
Blah, blah, blah, blah.
It's been really nice talking to you, Matt.
- Gotcha.
(upbeat music) - So I'm going to teach you how to break into a group when they're having a conversation.
- Oh, okay.
- So what you need to do is you kinda have to be courageous, that's the key.
- Oh, boy.
- Yeah, so you put your Bold hat on, your imaginary Bold hat.
- Okay.
- You walk up to that group, you have a smile on your face, eye contact.
I know you've got a good smile and good eye contact.
And then you say something like, to the whole group, you look like a fun group!
- Oh, wow.
(laughs) - Does that sound scary?
- It sounds a bit scary, yeah.
- Yeah, yeah?
Well, you could also do the hover method, where you stand outside the group, and you kind of hover until someone gives you eye contact.
- I think I'm good at that one.
- Are you?
Okay.
- Just hover.
- Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- Maybe indefinite.
(laughs) - If that's more comfortable, that is just fine.
And then once someone gives you eye contact, then you can introduce yourself.
(upbeat music) When you're mingling, eating, drinking, and trying to shake hands, it can be really difficult, because there's so much going on.
- Yeah, it's a lot to handle.
- It's a lot to handle, exactly.
So, I'm going to teach you how to hold a plate and a glass in one hand, to keep your right hand free for shaking people's hands.
- Okay.
- So, put the little plate, it has to be a small plate, put it between, in your left hand, between your ring finger, and your middle finger.
Put the glass in the top three fingers, just like that.
- Oh, okay.
- Now we can still shake hands.
- Gotcha.
- You can eat.
You can take the glass out and drink.
- Yeah, look at that, wow.
- Look it, you're a pro.
