Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipSenator Corey Booker is breaking his silence calling for his colleague and friend Senator Bob Menendez to resign joining a growing list of Democrats in the upper chamber more than a dozen who've called on him to step down after his indictment on federal bribery and Corruption charges in a statement Booker said the allegations were quote hard to reconcile with the person I know adding menendez's decision not to resign is a mistake and doing so would be the best for those the senator spent his life serving at the same time the list of people who are considering running for his seat is also growing setting up a Statewide game of political musical chairs senior political correspondent David Cruz reports the Menendez indictment news dropped with a bright flash of a Megaton bomb late last week today I'm announcing that my office has obtained a three-count indictment charging Senator Robert Menendez his wife naden Menendez and three New Jersey businessmen men while Hana Jose ybe and Fred Davies for bribery offenses but it took most of the day for the concussion to be felt by the end of business though statements from the governor and other legislative leaders calling from Menendez to step down set in motion a chain reaction that reached down to South Jersey and reverberated around the state first Third District Congressman Andy Kim announcing that since bendeez won't go on his own he's compelled to challenge him in a primary this is one of those moments where you have to decide what you're going to do and we see what Senator Menendez is going to do he said I'm not going anywhere Larry ham longtime activist and chairman of the newark-based people's Organization for Progress will also make a bid for the senate seat I was contemplating a running before Senator Mendez was indicted I made a final decision to run this summer and just so happened that um uh the week that I filed uh to run was the week that uh Senator Menendez was indicted instead of waiting for all the facts to be presented others have rushed to judgment because they see a political opportunity for themselves or those around them there is General consensus among Party leaders that a bob bendeez is done and B that the field to succeed him May yet be cleared by a name well known to many the first lady of the great state of New Jersey Tammy Snider Murphy I don't know that she would clear the field necessarily but she could clear the field yeah absolutely and and the strategy would be and I don't know how far along they are in their thinking but the strategy would be and this is I'm sorry to sound crass about this but when you have somebody who can sell fund and they go out and they make their pitch to the county shares it's you know spreading the wealth around it's it's you know greasing the wheels and and making money available for their campaigns and whether or not that translates into getting County support and county lines and that kind of things but wait as they say there's more who will fill the vacancy if Andy Kim does depart turns out there's no shortage of potential candidates at least considering a run there is too much partisan politics in in Washington and not enough people willing to work together for the betterment of the people as a woman who is a strong independent woman who wants to make the difference on the right woman for the job Fallout is indiscriminate and it's spread into the eighth congressional district where Rob Menendez who stood by his dad in a statement last week could be feeling its effects with hobok and mayor Ravi Bala announcing a potential primary Challenge and Progressive suggesting that their time has come elections do have consequences but the reverse is also true and the consequences of one man's actions are having an intense ripple effect with more still to come around the state I'm David Cruz NJ Spotlight [Music] [Music]
