Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipThe Harris campaign failed to get enough votes from three core Democratic voting blocs.
That's black men who've been loyal voters for the party and were crucial to Joe Biden's victory in 2020.
Hispanic and Latino voters who broke for Trump in much larger numbers this year, and young voters.
All of these trends were evident throughout new Jersey last night, where President Trump made historic gains in counties that haven't shifted this drastically in decades.
Senior correspondent Joanna Gagis is following those numbers and joins us to break it all down.
Joanna, what can you tell us?
Well, Brianna, like you said, we know that Trump made historic gains here in new Jersey.
If you look at this map, this is the reddest that we've seen new Jersey in decades.
Now, Harris did win in new Jersey, 51.2% to Trump's 46.9%.
But that's by less than a 5% margin.
And I think that left a lot of people stunned last night to see just how deep the Trump, efforts kind of went.
Here in New Jersey, a state that is reliably blue.
So we're going to break it down for you.
We're going to do a side by side comparison.
But before we do I just want to highlight a couple counties.
You know here we go 2022.
Excuse me 2020 versus 2024.
I want to come over here where you see a much bluer new Jersey.
And I'm going to bring to you a couple counties, Morris in particular, and Gloucester down here in the south.
Both of these counties went to Joe Biden in 2020.
Both of those went back red in 2024.
That's not that surprising in this election.
But perhaps what is much more surprising are four counties here in new Jersey that did go to Hillary Clinton in 2016, went to Biden in 2020.
And now this year, for the first time in decades, went red.
And those counties are Passaic that you see up here in the North.
We've got Somerset here in central.
And then we have Atlantic and we have Cumberland counties.
Now, if you look at the placement, I mean, this is north to south new Jersey, but these these regions, these counties also cover a range of diversity.
We have urban centers here in Atlantic and up in Passaic.
We have more ocean and we have rural down in Cumberland and Atlantic.
This is suburbia here in Somerset County.
So we see that there's not one region that Trump was able to to kind of turn to him.
It spanned.
We're going to get into demographics in Passaic in a moment.
But I also want to point out that in every single county that you see, that's red here, that was also red in 2020.
Trump outpaced his own results.
He had higher turnout.
He had higher numbers percentages in every red county here.
Conversely, every blue region that you see here, Biden was able to secure higher percentages than Harris was last night.
So big performance for the Republican.
Poor performance for the Democrat.
There's just no two ways around it.
And that even goes for Essex.
Right here, which is one of the strongest Democratic, strongholds that we have in the state.
As you said, Brianna, Latino men in particular, young Latino men played a big role here.
We know in particular Passaic County.
That's where there's a very close, race that we saw playing out last night between Nellie Poe, state senator, and district nine against Billy Prempeh.
And that came down to just a 4% margin.
And we think that that too, is because of those young Latino males who Trump was able to get over to his side.
Back to you, Brianna.
Thanks, Joanna.
Yeah, it's striking there to see the maps side by side.
All right.
Thank you for that.
