Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipand finally tonight some empathy for all of us allergy sufferers New Jersey if you didn't know is in the midst of what experts call a pollen storm that yellow dust from trees has exploded coating everything from your car to the sidewalks what feels like your eyes the inside of your nose I don't need to go on but it's causing downright misery this season so if it feels like you're experiencing more severe conditions than years past that's because you are allergy expert Dr Leonard Bielroy joins me to explain why Dr Bielroy I have been waiting to talk to you all I can say is that myself my co-workers we are all suffering so severely from allergies what is happening right now in New Jersey um well right now we're probably at the peak of the uh allergy season so to speak and we're in the pollen storm area where it's starting to fade actually so but nonetheless uh we have had pollen counts from predominantly trees into the thousands that makes up the pollen storm and this is all basically due to the excessive amount of rain we've had recently which provided an incredible amount of nutrients for the trees which actually pollinate first New Jersey and as a tree pollen comes down which it is and it's now the storm is starting to wane it's starting to really decrease though people who are like you're self-describing we're still having symptoms is that once it starts if it's only a one day storm you you can weather the storm so to speak sure but when the storm is lasting two weeks and three weeks people become more and more miserable and it's just not going way and even with the pollen counts going down they just have already broken through and their symptoms are bothering them on a daily basis to the point where their poor sleep habits they're using they just are not functioning as well as they could be their quality of life are miserable yeah I mean I'm shocked that I'm even able to sit here right now without having a full-on allergy attack why though specifically are we seeing it get worse and worse every year well it's not getting worse and worse every year it there is a trend why are we seeing it well there has been changes in the weather patterns regarding climate where you know weather is a day-to-day item climate is over a period of time whether it's a you know we're not seeing palm trees outside of New Jersey but there has been a change there's been in earlier pollinating season it starts earlier and it's been ending a little bit later so we're getting a from what used to be regular like this for a number of years it's now getting earlier and later so we're getting exposed to more pollen throughout the time curious I'm curious how long uh this allergy season will last will it be different uh from past years um and and when we can expect some relief the pollen season is starting to wane or trees but right after trees we have grasses in fact as trees go down grasses go up but it's not at the same concentration uh trees are in the hundreds to thousands of pollen grains per cubic meter of air that's a lot of that's the yellow stuff on your car whereas grass pollen is from 10 to 100 and that it's a light dusting and that will be more noticeable in June so that we have another week or so of tree pollinating and then it will fade down to a lower levels but grass pollen what is already starting to kick in and that will rise in June so what you're telling me is that I'm not going to get relief this is not the news that I wanted to hear all right Dr Leonard Bielroy leading expert on climate change and allergies thank you for the not so good news uh but very important information there you're welcome look forward to working with you in the future [Music]
