Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- Hey everybody.
It's fun Friday.
And I'm so glad that you've joined us, cause I'm trying something new today.
I'm trying to hit the beach ball off my right hand, my left hand, my knee and my head.
Let's see if we can do it.
Oh, not quite, but let's try again one more time.
Oh, almost.
You know, sometimes I love trying new things, but it also can be really hard.
Right?
And I think I'm going to be really good at it right away, but sometimes I'm not, and it may take a lot of practice and I have to work at it.
You know, whenever I'm doing new things, one thing that I have found that is so important, is to have the right attitude and the right mindset.
You know, scientists have talked about these, two different types of mindsets.
One is called a fixed mindset, which means I believe that: I'm either really good at something, or I'm not.
Maybe you just feel like you were born, really great at soccer, or you were just born not very good at something else, right?
And you know, we can have that mindset and it's really easy to have, but there's this second mindset that scientists talk about, and they call it a growth mindset.
You see a growth mindset, is that attitude that we believe that we can get better.
We can continue to grow and improve.
Maybe you're not great at something yet.
You know, I, whenever I was playing basketball, it can be hard, right?
It's tough.
But I know that if I practice, and I work at dribbling, and I work at shooting the basketball, that I can get better, right?
And so we've got to keep that mindset, where we can continue to improve.
Maybe it's actually something you're great at, you know, maybe it's solving math problems, cause you guys are awesome at that.
But can you continue to improve?
You bet.
And it's important that we continue to challenge ourselves, that we try these new things.
I remember when I was first learning to play the ukulele, I had never tried before.
And it was a little scary, but you know, who taught me?
One of my students in my class.
They were who taught me how to, you know, play a few chords on the ukulele.
Now I'm still learning and I'm not great at it yet, but if I continue to practice, and I keep working at it, I know that I can get better, right?
And so you can do the same.
So here's my question for you today.
What are you going to continue to work at today?
Or maybe you're going to try something new?
Let's think about things that you could try.
You could try a new sport.
You might have a soccer ball laying around, or you might have a basketball or a football, something that you could play and you could work at that.
Try and get better today.
Maybe you get to go swimming, or you'll have a chance to do something like that.
And can you work at getting better, at whatever you're trying?
Maybe you have some blocks or some toys, that you can build something with, and you can work at that.
Right, so whatever it might be, I want you to challenge yourself today.
Try something new, work at something and try and get better.
Maybe it's drawing a picture, and you're going to really work at it.
And guess what?
It may be really hard, but don't give up, and continue to work at it.
That's what's important is keeping that growth mindset.
So keep learning and keep solving problems.
And we'll see you again soon.
(upbeat music)
