On June 13, 1953 President Dwight D. Eisenhower spoke at the dedication of Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City South Dakota. The event formally renamed the already operational air base in honor of Brig. Gen. Richard Ellsworth, a base commander killed in a crash in March, 1953.
