Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) It is a great day to learn something new and I love learning with my friends.
My friend Lily is here today and I love learning with food.
Are you ready?
Okay.
Today, my friend Lily and I are working on an opinion paper.
An opinion paper is where you tell how you feel about something.
Lily and I have a lot in common, don't we?
Lily: Yes.
Jessica: Oh, yes.
But one thing we always agree on is our favorite food.
Lily, what do we celebrate every single Tuesday?
Lily: Tacos.
Jessica: Tacos.
We celebrate Taco Tuesday.
We do a Taco Tuesday dance.
We go out to eat and eat tacos.
It is our favorite day of the week.
But really, any day of the week is a good day for tacos, if you ask me.
Do you agree?
Yeah, I agree.
I'd eat tacos any day.
Okay, so today we're going to work together to write about our favorite food - tacos.
But before we do, we are going to talk about the best way to remember what to include in an opinion paper.
Sound good?
Lily: Yep.
Okay.
To do that, we are going to use another food to remind us.
And maybe you've heard of it.
I call it Oreo writing.
Yes.
You've heard this.
You know what Oreos are.
Okay.
But if you haven't heard of it, that's okay, too.
It's just a fun way to learn how to write an opinion paragraph.
In an Oreo writing, we start by writing our opinion.
We give it our opinion statement.
That's the O, right?
Lily: Right.
So we use the O for our opinion.
The next we're going to do is we're going to give a reason.
Reason starts with R. So that's our R. O is opinion and R is reason.
Next, we're going to give an example, which is the E. And last, we're going to restate our opinion.
That's the O again.
Ready?
Okay.
So we know a lot about tacos, right?
Are we taco experts?
Lily: Yeah.
I think so, too.
So we're going to use this same format if you want to extend your writing to add in extra details and examples.
Are you ready to write?
Lily: Yes.
Okay, let's go over what we talked about.
Are you ready?
We're going to use this Oreo template to help us with our writing.
First, we start with the O.
In our opinion, what is the best food in the whole world?
Lily: Tacos.
Jessica: Tacos, obviously.
So we're going to write tacos are the best food.
Awesome job.
All right.
Ready?
Next, we're going to give a reason.
How do tacos taste?
Lily: Good.
Jessica: They taste so good.
I like to say they're so yummy.
High five.
Nice job.
Tacos taste so good.
They're yummy.
We love them.
Okay, now we're going to give an example.
Are you ready?
Okay.
Do we like crunchy beef tacos?
Yes, we do.
Our favorite are crunchy beef tacos.
And then we like to end with our opinion again.
Okay.
So our opinion is tacos are the best food.
So we'd say like tacos are life.
They're the best food ever, right.
Okay.
Do you like to do anything else when we eat tacos?
What else do you like to eat when we're there?
Lily: The fish tank.
Jessica: I know.
What else do you like to eat at the restaurant?
Lily: Bean dip.
Jessica: You like bean dip.
And do I like bean dip or cheese dip?
Lily: Cheese dip.
Jessica: I like the cheese dip.
And then do you like salsa?
Lily: No.
Jessica: No, but I do, right?
So those are other things that we could, Lily: Hot.
Jessica: It is a little bit hot and spicy, isn't it?
That's true.
So those are other things that we could add about if we wanted to extend our writing.
Okay, so let's look at this together.
Are you ready?
Tacos are the best food.
They taste so yummy.
Very good.
My favorite are crunchy beef tacos.
Tacos are life.
You did awesome.
Thanks for your help.
You can write an opinion paper on anything.
It is a great way to share why you feel a particular way about something or your favorite food.
So what do you think?
What is your favorite type of food or restaurant to eat at?
Go.
We used the tacos, didn't we?
You like that place, don't you?
You have a special place you like to go to when you eat tacos.
So you could even write this paper and you could write that tacos are your favorite food.
But you could write about your favorite place to eat tacos.
What else could we write about with it?
Lily: Ice cream.
You do get ice cream afterwards.
Don't you?
But could you also say who you like to eat tacos with, huh?
What day you like to eat tacos?
Lily: On Tuesdays.
Jessica: On Tuesdays.
So these are all ways that we could extend our paper and add more paragraphs and more statements to our opinion paper, right?
Okay.
But maybe tacos aren't your favorite food like Lily and I.
Maybe your favorite food is pizza or hamburgers.
Lily: French fries., Jessica: You could add in French fries.
Perfect.
So you could add details about what you like to eat on your pizza or your hamburgers.
You could say that you like French fries on the side.
There's so many things that we could Lily: Onion rings.
Jessica: Girk, you know I love onion rings with ranch dip.
Yeah.
See, we get there so much we could write about, isn't there?
When you start your writing, begin with thinking about your opinion, but you have to be ready to give facts or reasons why you feel that way.
Don't forget, you'll need an introduction.
And that's where you state your opinion with a clearly stated focus statement right?
Like tacos are the best food.
Next, we use specific evidence, the reason to support your opinion.
And then an example which explains why you feel that way.
Don't forget the conclusion.
And today we restated our opinion as our conclusion.
Last, it's always a good idea any time you're writing to go back and check your paper for correct spelling, capitalization, punctuation.
We made sure there was punctuation at the end of each of our sentences and that each sentence started with a capital letter.
Thank you, Lily, for your help today.
I had so much fun.
I think it's taco time now, though.
Lily: Yes.
Jessica: Yes.
(upbeat music) Get up off your feet.
Ahh, ooo, ooo.
It's time to rise and shine.
