LGTBQ+ advocates say emails show prejudice, attorney disputes that characterization
When the Election Law Enforcement Commission meets in a special session Tuesday, it will discuss charges of anti-LGBTQ bias on the part of executive director Jeff Brindle. It also coincides with an effort by the Murphy administration to get unprecedented, unchecked, control over the commission, which looks into the role of money -- dark, independent, conflicted and/or legitimate -- in politics.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthere are more calls tonight for the head of New Jersey's election law enforcement commission to resign after a new round of emails were made public that Advocates say attack the lgbtq community and reveal racial Prejudice it comes as the commission is set to hold a public hearing on the allegations and just days after the Senate passed a bill giving the governor the ability to replace current elect Commissioners with his own picks unchecked senior political correspondent David Cruz reports when the election law enforcement commission or elect meets in a special session tomorrow it won't officially have anything to do with any pending election law violations instead the meeting will discuss charges of anti-lgbtq bias on the part of executive director Jeff brindle it's also probably coincidentally or not the first step in an effort by the Murphy Administration to get unprecedented unchecked control over a commission that looks into the role of money dark independent conflicted and or legitimate in politics but first there's brindle a new batch of emails has prompted Garden State equality to go from Silent on the matter to calling for brindle to step down the content of the emails show that elix workplace is steeped in a toxic brine of biases which has no place in a civilized society the email is uncovered by an open public records act request from attorney CJ Griffin shows brindles sharing emails and in some cases adding comments to stories about gay and transgender people are you coming out no Lincoln or Washington's birthday but we can celebrate National Coming Out day he writes in one email about the state's observance of the day we are truly living through insane times he writes in another email this one about a trans inmate who impregnated two other female inmates have we seen it translate from what he said in these emails into policies or procedures or practices is at elac well he's now infected the workplace with partisan politics by sending these emails and so we have no idea of how far reaching the impact of these emails have been attorney Bruce Afrin is representing brindle who is suing the governor for trying to oust him afren says brindle has written more than 20 000 emails During the period in question and that the relative handful uncovered don't prove anything close to anti-gay sentiment all that Jeff grindel did in those emails was have some very mild criticism of what nearly everyone would agree are our extreme policies and this latest round of emails is because a politically connected Law Firm decided to make an Oprah request and out of 20 000 emails found six or seven that happened to touch on some lgbtq issues none of this is anti-game one thing I noticed was just that there were a lot of emails from Breitbart and town hall and far-right websites like that and emails back and forth between the executive director and deputy director and that I went to those websites and there's a big fixation under people and so I just filed another request for keyword with transgender and some of the words that those websites use and that's when these other emails started coming back Griffin says the aim in finding these emails is simply transparency and the fact that they're being used by the administration to justify giving the governor unrestricted control over the elect board and by extension brindle's fate there are two separate issues in my mind and I don't think that the truth should ever be um suppressed simply because we don't like maybe some other way in which one group might use it uh in one way and another group might use it in another way the elac board meets tomorrow in Trenton at which time brindle is expected to address them and a hearing will be held on the emails and the charges being made against brindle the other stuff about the governor taking over the elect board that now moves to the assembly where for the moment it is scheduled for a vote on Thursday I'm David Cruz NJ Spotlight news [Music]
