Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat music) - Good morning, amazing students of Arkansas.
Today I am with Nubyia, and we are going to compare how the way we travel has changed over time since the first automobile.
Now Nubyia, what do you think are some ways we would've traveled before automobiles?
- Probably from horses or boats.
- All right, good job.
People would've either walk, ride animals such as a horse and if they were near water they would've definitely used boats.
Do you know anything about the first automobiles?
- I haven't really learned about it yet.
- Well, that's all right, today I think we should take a trip in the time machine and find out.
Are you ready?
- Yes.
- All right, can you pull the lever and take me back to 1913?
- Okay.
- All let's go.
(time machine clanging, static, springs boing) Whoa, whoa, that was amazing.
The year 1913 was the first known time in the United States for an assembly line to be used to build automobiles.
What do you think about it?
- [Nubyia] I don't know, it looks really slow to me.
- Yeah, it's not the fastest thing but it would definitely get you where you needed to go.
Now, I think it's time we talk about the sports car.
Nubyia, would you do the honors?
- Yes.
- All right.
(time machine clanging, static, springs boing) Whoo, all right, we made it.
The sports car was introduced in the United States in 1953, but it was during the eighties when the sports car became supercars.
Check out these cars, what do you think about them?
- [Nubyia] They look way cooler.
- [Trey] (chuckling) Yes, notice how they look so much cooler, right?
Not only did the style of the cars look cooler but it helped make them faster too.
What do you notice about the engines?
- [Nubyia] The engines are huge.
- Right, the engines are so much bigger and they used way more gas than anything we would see in our time even.
These engines were also not good for the environment.
Let's head back to the present.
(time machine clanging, static, springs boing) Whoo, all right, we're back.
That was a cool trip.
Now that we are in the present let's talk about cars around now.
What other cars do you know about from our time?
- Probably like muscle cars or something.
- All right, yeah, well now we use battery-powered cars that cut down on that pollution.
These are just a few ways that transportation has changed over the years.
Can you all watching think of any other things that have changed from the past?
Ask an adult to help you do your own research (upbeat music) and see what you can find.
That's all the time we have today.
Hey, Nubyia, I wonder what cars will look like in the future?
Maybe we should take another trip.
- Definitely.
(upbeat music ends)
