This evening marks the second annual "United in Song" and I couldn't be happier to join such an extraordinary group of talented artists on such a special occasion.

This incredible country of ours is as diverse as it is wide, but let it be said, we hold much more in common than what makes us different.

From pop and country to classical, jazz to ballet, Broadway to opera, we are celebrating this New Year with an incredible line-up of performances.

COLLINS: This is the place where we have a democratic way of life, which is imperfect but moves towards the better angels every day and the things that we see happening today in this country, I can't imagine how extraordinary this is to be a person who comes to this country after coming from a place where there is not a democracy.

MIDORI: I think that culture is something that we have to consider as not a singular, but that it has many, many, many sides and many, many faces, and it's very difficult to say that I belong to two cultures because I belong to many more cultures.

RIVERA: This is the United States so I think we should unite and try to understand and appreciate, definitely appreciate the differences, because all the differences are beautiful.

MERRITT: He made his Broadway debut starring in "Jersey Boys" and has gone on to star opposite Sara Bareilles in the Broadway hit musical "Waitress".

From his upbringing in New Mexico as part of the Navajo nation, he has created a broad musical palette from ancient songs of love and war, to modern funk and jazz.

RIVERA: Yeah, I consider myself having lived the American dream.

I was living as a kid.

Not as Puerto Rican kid, not as a Scandinavian kid, not as an Italian, just as a kid.

Then I won a scholarship to the New York City Ballet.

I came along at a very good time.

MIDORI: I came actually to the US from Japan when I was 10 years old my mother brought me, to be able to pursue my musical studies, I was studying violin in Japan and my mother wanted to give me an opportunity to study in America in New York at a particular school with a particular teacher and America is where this got fulfilled.

America was where I studied and learned and I, went on, I continue on to live.

COLLINS: My family is all from Ireland and England but they came here and they found lives where they could make a living, where they could have joy, where they could have pleasure, where they could do something they wanted with their lives.

We've got something that shines throughout the world and every day that I wake up I say thank you.

RIVERA: The Arts are an absolute unifying part of humanity.

MIDORI: Music and the arts they give very much meaning to our lives.

We actually can connect without a verbal, a verbal agenda so to say.

And I think it is something that can connect directly from heart to heart.

COLLINS: One of the things that I feel the best about is that I'm giving people something that's, I hope, of quality that's beautiful.

I don't think people would stay on the planet if they didn't have beauty in their lives.

And on July 4th, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was approved to govern this great country.

That same day, it was read aloud to the public eagerly waiting outside, right here where we stand tonight.

It seems like such an incredibly long time ago, but in comparison to other countries, we are still so very young.

While we have made such vast strides in business and industry, we have experienced significant pains in addressing equality, inclusivity and unity.

President Kennedy once said "I am certain that after the dust of centuries has KENNEDY: Passed over our cities, we too, will be remembered not for victories or defeats in battle or in politics, but for our... RIVERA: "Contribution to the human spirit."

How will we be remembered?

What will be our contribution be to the next generation of this great country?
