Our wolves are from the California Wolf Center.

They came to us when they were seven and they had never been trained anything.

I'm the primary carnivore keeper at the Lake Superior Zoo.

Today we're going to get a really inside look at something that you don't really see very often.

And that's how we take care of our animals, especially our large carnivores on their vet exam day.

So today, Sierra and Shasta, our wolves, are going to be getting their exams.

[Beeps] This is Sierra getting this exam.

They're 13 years old.

So we're on the lookout for things like arthritis, cancer.

We take bloodwork, we do X-rays, they get their teeth cleaned.

Last year, our vet said they had the teeth of five year old wolves, so we're very happy with that.

And I heard that her ears are super clean too, which is great.

We'll also do a little grooming session since we don't get to get our hands on these animals that often, we're going to groom out any burrs they might have, so they have nice, clean, fluffy coats going into winter.

And we are also going to trim their nails.

Their nails get really long.

I love being involved in vet exams.

It's also a little bit worrying every year, especially with our geriatric animals, that we're going to find something we didn't know about.

But then I get the all clear that they're nice and healthy, and it is just such a relief.

I love them so much.

And when they wake up, I'm always like, oh, you poor girl, I'm going to give you extra chicken.

And they really deserve it.
