For those who work on the Huber farm, this is the beginning of a long day ahead.
(tractor engine whirring) This morning, like every morning, it's off to the fields.
(tractor engine whirring) These men expect to work hard.
It's the only way they know.
(tractor engine whirring) (soft music) They are migrant workers, and they are far from their home in Mexico.
(solemn music) They come to American soil seeking a better way of life for themselves and for their families.
(workers chattering) Today's job consists of picking grapes, and very little time is wasted.
(leaves snapping) (worker whistling) But the mood is lighthearted.
(worker singing in Spanish) They talk amongst themselves.
(worker speaking Spanish) These workers are responsible for picking the grapes off of some three acres worth of vines.
And while it may appear to be a tedious, somewhat lengthy task, there are incentives to get the job done quickly.
For every full basket, one ticket is handed out.
At the end of the week, these tickets are exchanged for money, money that has not always come so easily.
(leaves snapping) - [Jose] Yeah.
Yeah, I like it.
I like this job.
In Mexico, no make too much money.
- [Melissa] For the past 10 years, Jose has spent eight months out of the year on the Huber Farm.
While the money is necessary, it is hard to leave his family behind.
(solemn music) - The problem is my wife no have papers, you know?
There's too much troubles bringing my family to the United States.
(solemn music continues) - [Melissa] The others are in the same situation, so together, they've become part of the Huber family.
(tractor engine whirring) - [Ted] In a small family business like this, all employees become part of the family.
(tractor engine whirring) - [Carl] I think it's good for us and them both.
(worker drowned out by engine running) They like this kinda work, but generally, and they make enough money to send back to their families and help support them.
Evidently, where they come from, there's too many people.
(soft music) - [Melissa] And that's why they feel so fortunate to be working here in America.
- [Carl] You can see, if you do something and put enough into it, the outcome sort of speaks for itself.
- [Ted] Yeah, these guys know how to work.
They know what a hard day of work really is.
